Ingredients

For the Breading
  • 1 cup Panko Breadcrumbs Provides a light, crispy coating; substitute with regular breadcrumbs, but texture will vary slightly.
  • 1 tbsp Old Bay Seasoning Adds unique flavor and spice; a mix of celery salt, paprika, and black pepper can serve as a substitute.
  • 1 tsp Marjoram Imparts a warm herbal note; oregano can be used as an alternative.
  • 1 tsp Garlic Powder Enhances savory taste; fresh garlic can be substituted, but adjust the quantity accordingly.
  • 1 tsp Kosher Salt Essential for seasoning; regular salt can be used, but use less as it’s finer.
  • 1/2 tsp Fresh Ground Black Pepper Adds subtle heat; white pepper can be used for a milder flavor.
For the Mushrooms
  • 1 cup Buttermilk Acts as a moistening agent and helps the breadcrumbs adhere; substitute with milk and vinegar.
  • 1 lb White Button Mushrooms Main ingredient, can swap with cremini mushrooms for a deeper taste.
  • 1/2 cup All-Purpose Flour Provides a base to help the coating stick; gluten-free flour can be used.
For Frying
  • 2 cups Vegetable Oil Used for frying to achieve crispiness; can replace with canola or peanut oil.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Crispy Fried Mushrooms
  1. In a small bowl, combine panko breadcrumbs, Old Bay seasoning, marjoram, garlic powder, kosher salt, and fresh ground black pepper. Mix well and set aside.
  2. In another bowl, pour in buttermilk, ensuring it's at room temperature, and set aside.
  3. Rinse white button mushrooms and pat dry. Place in a zip-top bag with all-purpose flour and shake gently to coat.
  4. Dip each floured mushroom into the buttermilk, then roll in the panko breadcrumb mixture, coating thoroughly.
  5. Heat vegetable oil in a large pot to 375°F (190°C), using a candy thermometer for accuracy.
  6. Drop breaded mushrooms into hot oil in small batches, frying for 2-3 minutes until golden brown.
  7. For air frying, preheat air fryer to 375°F and cook breaded mushrooms in a single layer for 5-7 minutes, checking for a crispy texture.
