  • 16 ounces White Button Mushrooms Cremini mushrooms can be used for a more robust flavor.
  • 1 cup Buttermilk Milk with a dash of vinegar can be a quick alternative.
  • 1 cup All-Purpose Flour Substitute with gluten-free flour if needed.
For Frying
  • 2 cups Vegetable Oil Canola or peanut oil can be used as alternatives.

Equipment

  • Dutch oven
  • Mixing Bowls
  • slotted spoon
  • candy thermometer

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine panko bread crumbs, Old Bay seasoning, marjoram, garlic powder, kosher salt, and fresh ground black pepper. Stir well to evenly distribute the ingredients.
  2. In a separate bowl, pour in the buttermilk, which serves as a wet base for the panko coating.
  3. Rinse the mushrooms under cool water and pat them dry with paper towels. Lightly dust each mushroom in all-purpose flour.
  4. Dip the floured mushrooms into the buttermilk and then roll them in the panko mixture, pressing gently to ensure adherence.
  5. In a Dutch oven, pour enough vegetable oil to reach about 1.25 inches deep. Heat the oil to 375°F.
  6. Carefully drop the coated mushrooms into the hot oil in small batches, frying them for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown.
  7. Remove the fried mushrooms with a slotted spoon and transfer them to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
