Step-by-Step Instructions
- Start by bringing a large pot of salted water to a rolling boil over high heat.
- Once boiling, add in the fresh green beans and blanch them for just 1 minute.
- Immediately transfer the beans to an ice-cold water bath to halt the cooking process, then drain and set aside.
- In a large skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium-high heat.
- Add the sliced onions and season them generously with salt and pepper. Sauté for about 5-8 minutes until softened and translucent.
- Lower the heat slightly and continue cooking the onions until caramelized to a deep golden brown, around 15 minutes.
- If needed, deglaze the skillet by adding 1/4 cup of broth to enhance flavor.
- Add minced garlic to the skillet and cook for about 1 minute until fragrant.
- Wipe out excess fat from the skillet and add another tablespoon of butter. Once melted, incorporate the blanched green beans.
- Add red pepper flakes, and season with salt and pepper to taste. Sauté for 1-2 minutes until heated through.
- Transfer the sautéed green beans with French onions to a serving dish and enjoy immediately.
