  • 1 tbsp Italian Seasoning
  • 1/4 cup Chopped Fresh Basil Or 1 tbsp dried basil as a substitute
  • 4 Garlic Cloves, chopped
For the Sauce
  • 2 tbsp Tomato Paste
  • 1 cup Marsala Wine or Chicken Broth For deglazing
  • 15 oz Canned Diced Tomatoes
  • 1/4 tsp Red Pepper Flakes Optional for spice

Step-by-Step Instructions for Italian Sausage Peppers and Onions
  1. Heat 2 tablespoons of extra-virgin olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat until shimmering.
  2. Add 1 pound of sweet Italian sausage, breaking apart with a wooden spoon, and cook for 7-10 minutes until browned.
  3. Remove the sausage from the skillet and drain excess fat, leaving flavorful bits behind.
  4. Add sliced onions, bell peppers, and chopped garlic cloves, sautéing for 2-3 minutes until softened and fragrant.
  5. Sprinkle in 1 tablespoon of Italian seasoning and 1/4 cup of chopped fresh basil, stirring for another 2 minutes until the onions are translucent.
  6. Pour in 1 cup of Marsala wine (or chicken broth) and add 2 tablespoons of tomato paste and 15-ounce can of diced tomatoes, stirring to combine.
  7. Introduce the sliced peppers and onions back in, seasoning with 1 teaspoon of kosher salt and 1 teaspoon of black pepper, and simmer for 5 minutes.
  8. Reduce heat, return browned sausage to the skillet, cover, and simmer for an additional 15 minutes until the sauce thickens.
  9. Serve over creamy mashed potatoes, pasta, or in sub sandwiches.
