I adopted my best friend’s four-year-old son after he abandoned him without warning.
Fourteen years later, the boy invited his biological father to a championship game—and the speech he delivered afterward made me break down in front of the entire gym.
My best friend, Deshawn, called me at two in the morning fourteen years ago.
His wife had just d. i. e. d from an a. n. e. u. r. y. s. m. No warning.
Their four-year-old son, Reggie, was asleep in the next room while Deshawn repeatedly whispered, “I can’t do this, Gabriel.
I can’t.” I promised I’d be there that morning. When I reached his house at seven, Deshawn was gone.
A note waited on the counter. I’m not built for this. I was twenty-eight, single, and working as a mechanic for nineteen dollars an hour.
But I adopted Reggie because I couldn’t imagine letting him enter foster care.
I promised myself I would become the best father possible. Reggie became my only child.
