After 69 years of marriage, my husband left me nothing in his will. Then his lawyer handed me a letter that began: “This was my plan.
Now I have to tell you the truth.” My husband, Silas, passed away recently.
We were married for sixty-nine years. We met in college. We had three children.
Five grandchildren. And I can honestly say that I was happy. When he died, I felt as if a part of my chest had been torn out.
I thought nothing could hurt more than that. Then came the day his lawyer asked the whole family to gather for the reading of the will.
He explained that Silas had left money to several charities. The cabin was left to his sister.
The investments were to be divided among our children and grandchildren.
And then came the sentence that I still remember word for word. “To my wife, Marguerite, I leave no assets under this will.”
