And it was stupid of me to believe that Lily could still be alive. But I couldn’t afford NOT to find out for myself.
I don’t remember the drive to the hospital. My vision was clouded with tears the entire way.
In the emergency room, the receptionist nurse gave me a look of compassion.
“You need to go to room 4B,” she said softly. “Miss Lily and the doctor are waiting for you.”
Miss Lily. Hearing those words almost made my knees buckle. Through the crack in the door, I could see a woman sitting on the examination table.
Dark hair falling over her shoulders. Just like my Lily once had. She was holding something small against her ribs.
