For several seconds, Eleanor Bennett simply stared at him. Then she quickly told Ethan I was almost ready and came upstairs.
I was putting on my earrings when Mom entered my bedroom. Then she locked the door.
“You can go to prom with Ethan tonight,” she said. “But only under one condition.”
I laughed. “What? Home by midnight?” “No.” Her hands were trembling. “You need to hear the truth I should have told you years ago.”
My smile faded. “What truth?” Mom sat beside me and took both my hands.
“About Ethan.” She paused. “And about me.” My stomach tightened. Tears filled her eyes.
