“And apparently I was right.” “No,” Nathan said, standing up. “You’re going to tell yourself that because it’s easier than admitting you built a world where betrayal is the only thing you know how to recognize.”
Daniel had security escort him out. But his words stayed. Three days later, the newspapers began repeating the same idea: Daniel Hale had built one of the strongest corporations in the country, but he didn’t trust anyone inside it.
Around that same time, Maria Torres began working at his house. She was thirty-two years old and had been hired by an agency after the former mansion manager retired.
She was efficient without being rigid. Quiet without being timid. And, unlike nearly every new employee Daniel had met, she seemed completely indifferent to impressing him.
She never praised the house. She never mentioned the salary. She never asked questions about his work.
Every morning she said: “Good morning, Mr. Hale.” Every evening she said: “Good evening, Mr.
Hale.” Daniel began to appreciate her almost immediately. That irritated him.
What her employment file didn’t make completely clear was that Maria had a three-year-old daughter.
Her name was Lily. Daniel discovered her one Tuesday afternoon when he walked into the kitchen for a glass of water and found a little girl in a purple dress sitting on the marble floor.
She had a coloring book on her lap. She was drawing a green dinosaur wearing what looked like a red birthday hat.
The little girl looked up. Daniel stood staring at her. She looked back at him.
“Hello,” Lily said. “Hello.” “Do you live here?” “Yes.” “In all of this?”
Daniel frowned. “All of what?” Lily opened her arms as if pointing to the entire universe.
“The giant house.” Daniel looked around the massive kitchen. For the first time in years, he didn’t know how to respond.
And that was the first time Lily Torres won a conversation with him. I know you want to know the rest of the story, because what happened next is completely unexpected.
But unfortunately, Facebook doesn’t support long posts. Write ‘yes’ in the comments and I will send you the rest.
